Let the holes find the light

Dark fabric makes pale and bright threads sing, but seeing the holes can take a little practice. Try placing a light-colored cloth on your lap or under your work. The lighter background can help the grid stand out.

Use a comfortable task light and move it until the holes are visible without glare. If you use a light beneath the fabric, keep it gentle rather than dazzling.

Keep the fabric comfortably open

A hoop can help hold the weave steady. Aim for even tension without distorting the fabric. Check the shape of your crosses as you go and ease the tension if they start to stretch.

Some stitchers find larger-count holes easier to begin with. If you change fabric count, recalculate the finished dimensions before cutting your fabric.

Count little, count often

Work in small areas and use the chart’s grid to check your position. Pause at recognizable shapes before moving to another part of the pattern.

Rest your eyes regularly. The night can be part of the atmosphere without being your only source of light.

A creature of your own.
