Before you trim anything

Make sure the work is centered and you’re happy with the position of the hoop screw. Check your material’s care instructions before cleaning or pressing. If you press, protect the stitching and avoid flattening the crosses.

Do not trim close to the hoop straight away. Leave enough fabric to gather behind the piece, then check the fit again. You can always trim more later.

Gather the back

With the design held evenly in the hoop, sew a loose running stitch around the extra fabric on the back. Gently draw the thread to gather the edge toward the center and secure it.

A circle of felt or backing fabric can cover the gathered edge. Sew it in place if you want a removable finish. Take care not to catch or pull the stitches on the front.

Find a small patch of wall

Display the piece away from strong direct sunlight and damp areas. A small hook, ribbon, or shelf is all a mini hoop needs.

A group of hoops can grow slowly, one finished creature at a time. There’s no need to fill the whole wall tonight.

A creature of your own.

When you’re ready, there’s a small gathering of woodland oddities waiting to meet you.
